Heated Tobacco FAQs
Is nicotine harmful?
Nicotine is addictive. It is not recommended for children and young adults, pregnant or breast-feeding women, and persons with existing medical conditions.
While nicotine is not the primary cause of smoking-related diseases, the use of nicotine-containing products is not risk-free. IQOS delivers nicotine in a comparable way to cigarettes.
Our clinical studies show that the amount and rate of nicotine absorbed when using one tobacco stick with IQOS is comparable to that of smoking one cigarette.
Is heating tobacco same as burning tobacco?
No. IQOS uses HEATCONTROLTM Technology that heats tobacco – unlike cigarettes that burn tobacco. When tobacco is heated, it does so without any fire or burning involved. Because there is no fire, it releases a non-smoke aerosol – which is different from the smoke being released from a burning cigarette.
The pioneering SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEMTM in IQOS ILUMA and TEREA completely reinvents the way tobacco is heated. The new bladeless SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEMTM uses an innovative metal heating element placed inside the stick and coated with stainless steel for seamless heating of tobacco.
This means your tobacco is heated from the core and provides real tobacco taste and satisfaction, with no blade breakages. IQOS ILUMA requires no cleaning, is easy to use, and offers a wide range of tobacco consumables to choose from.

Are heat not burn tobacco products a better alternative to cigarettes?
IQOS is a better alternative to cigarettes. Unlike cigarettes, IQOS does not burn tobacco and therefore produces no smoke.
The best choice any smoker can make is to quit cigarettes and nicotine altogether. But for adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke or use nicotine containing products, switching completely to IQOS is a better alternative to continued smoking.
Important information: IQOS is not risk-free. It delivers nicotine, which is addictive.
What is the difference between burning and heating tobacco?
Burning tobacco involves fire or combustion, that results to a release of cigarette smoke and smell. Heating tobacco, on the other hand, does not involve any fire or burning.
Because there is no fire, it releases a non-smoke aerosol – which is different from the smoke being released from a burning cigarette; along with other benefits such as no ash and less smell compared to cigarettes.
